Saturday Slant: Your Misperception

31 May 2003 • 10:32 PT BY Pariah Burke

Saturday Slant

week 13

What have you concluded about another person or situation that was not actually as you perceived?

Last week’s Saturday Slant was about how others may misperceive you. Let’s turn it around. Discuss one example of a time when you drew a conclusion about a person or situation to discover later that how it appeared was not actually how it was.

Update: Strawberry Blonde’s Kids

30 May 2003 • 00:19 PT BY Pariah Burke

Heart • Soul

Like packets through the fiber-op, these are the Posts of Our Blogs…

So, I told you I met Strawberry Blonde’s girls, S, five, and J, eight-next-week. What I haven’t had time to share is even more exciting.

First, a recap: We spent the majority of this past weekend together, Strawberry Blonde, her girls, and I. Saturday is the girls’ full day with their father (henceforth “the Ex”). Per our usual, Strawberry Blonde and I spent saturday together. We took Maxine’s youngest, Hunter (age 3), to McDonald’s and the park. Then we attended a birthday party for Maxine’s husband, Jim, thus introducing Strawberry Blonde to Maxine and Jim for the very first time. They hit it off magnificently!

And on this episode of “As The Blog Turns”…

Napped, Random Thoughts

29 May 2003 • 23:41 PT BY Pariah Burke

Mind • Thought

I took an unplanned nap earlier with Strawberry Blonde. We love napping together. However, now I’m awake (of sorts) and full of undirected energy. I had in mind several blog posts and articles I wanted to write, but in the process of applying the latest security patch Windows XP says I need—and the requisite rebooting—I’ve lost track of those ideas.

Anyway, so my ideas for full-length articles and a couple of blog posts left me. Here’re a few things that are/have been going on in my life:

Met Strawberry Blonde’s Kids

24 May 2003 • 10:06 PT BY Pariah Burke

Heart • Soul

Friday night (last night) I met Strawberry Blonde’s beautiful little girls for the first time. They’re S, five, and J, 8. After careful consideration and planning, we waited until last night to introduce me to them as Strawberry Blonde’s friend.

This’ll be brief as the Memes List stuff has taken up most of my morning.

They were quite taken with me, and I with them. They’re incredible kids. I’m walking on cloud nine!

And, as was part of the boundaries Strawberry Blonde and I set, now that I’ve met her kids, she gets a key to my house.

Send Me Some Luck?

24 May 2003 • 10:02 PT BY Pariah Burke

Mind • Thought

Friday I made a bold move professionally. I can’t discuss it—no, it doesn’t involve me changing careers or even jobs. I can’t discuss the details. Just wish me luck, ok?

7th Heaven Survey

01. If you had to choose would you live on the equator or at the North Pole?
The equator, not so much for the heat versus cold thing (I generally prefer cold as one can always put on more clothing, but there reaches a point when one can remove nothing else.) but for the fact that there’s nothing to do at the North Pole. The equator has plenty of nice places to visit.

Saturday Slant: Misperception of You

24 May 2003 • 08:57 PT BY Pariah Burke

Saturday Slant

week 12

How does the way you appear to others differ from the real you?

Who we are to other people is filtered through the kaleidascope lenses of their perceptions. People often interpret one’s shyness as aloofness or arrogance. Someone who may appear confident and in charge is inside actually quite scared and uncertain. How do you appear to others, but are really not?

Grinding My Teeth

17 May 2003 • 14:44 PT BY Pariah Burke

Heart • Soul

This relates directly to my blogging lacktivity the last few weeks.

It’s become more and more obvious to me of late the tradeoff one makes when blogging under one’s own name. Perhaps I shouldn’t be so general and write instead in the first person.

Increasingly of late I have been frustrated by my blog. More specifically, I’ve been frustrated by the escalating conflict developing between my strong desire to express myself and my feelings through this blog and my loyalty to friends. These two concepts are at war within me. I began this blog because I had something to say. I have a voice, and I want to use it. Naturally, I invited my close friends to keep up and interact with me through the blog. They remain among my audience. What do you do when everything you feel you should blog about is about your friends?

Saturday Slant: Little Things

17 May 2003 • 09:16 PT BY Pariah Burke

Saturday Slant

week 11

When someone does them for you, what little things mean the most to you?

Little things tend to mean a great deal to us. Is it when a significant other surprises you with little love notes stuck to the bathroom mirror? Perhaps you’ve lent a friend your car and had it returned freshly washed. Does your neighbor make an extra effort to leave his newspaper on your doorstep when he’s done with it? Little efforts by others often mean more to us than grand gestures as demonstrations of kindness or affection. Which little things are the most important to you, and who does them?

I’m still here. I’m still alive. Busy couple weeks gearing up for the debut of a major new project at work. Tired. Sleepy. Zzzz

Did I fall asleep? Where was I? Oh. Yeah.

I’m still here. If not before then Saturday will be the day that I update the Memes List and handle all the other stuff. I’ve noticed a couple of memes have closed down. I did my very first 5ive Minute Stories meme and the next day it closed down. Is that a sign?

Meet The Parents

This past weekend I met Strawberry Blonde’s parents. Quoth the parents: “He’s almost too good to be true.” Can you see me doing the Happy Snoopy Dance? I did, actually, in the parking lot of my office when Strawberry Blonde told me what her parents had said. A grown man doing the Happy Snoopy Dance while talking on a cel phone in a parking lot.

Saturday Slant: Words of a Stranger

09 May 2003 • 22:57 PT BY Pariah Burke

Saturday Slant

week 10

Not too long ago a stranger said something to you that deeply effected you.

What was it? Under what circumstances was it said? How did you respond? Most importantly, in what way did it effect you? A random word from a stranger can, at the right (or wrong) time, dramatically alter one’s day, week, or even life. How was your day, week, or entire life altered by a word from a stranger? Special thanks to Strawberry Blonde for collaborating on this Slant.

5ive Minute Stories: Crying

5ive Minute Stories

FICTION: Topic: Crying

There was the tiniest of plops from the tear breaking the dark, cold surface of the coffee, which had until then been occupying itself merely with staining the interior of the paper cup. A single salty tear lent its bitterness to the tart coffee. Still, the plop was enough to alert Amanda that her distress was visible.

What would they see, she wondered. Would they see a woman who has just lost a dream job? Would the smartly-dressed yuppies in the trendy ala chic coffee bistro jump first to a tale of a broken heart, perhaps a young woman who has just returned from an attempt to surprise her lover only to discover him (or her) in the passionate embrace of another? Maybe her story would be thought more along the lines of a sick friend, perhaps a younger sibling struggling against a terminal illness.

Swiping salty moisture from her flushed cheeks, Amanda defiantly announced in her mind that she didn’t care what they thought, what story they concocted from the sight of a twenty-something woman weeping over a forgotten cup of coffee. What does it matter? Who cares what they who are coming and going and sitting and standing and purchasing and disposing and reading and sipping scattered about her think? Still, she worried about her mascara streaking. She couldn’t care less what they thought, these urbanite lunch-breakers sipping their Velvet Hammer cappuccinos and chai teas and munching their Heaven’s Breath pastries. She dipped her chin, forcing her hair to fall a bit more around her face, drawing the curtains to her sides.

Saturday Slant: Desire To Reality

03 May 2003 • 09:53 PT BY Pariah Burke

Saturday Slant

week 9

Have you ever wanted something so badly that you convinced yourself it was real or that you already had it?

Desire is a powerful motivator, and it is a powerful mind-altering emotion. Sometimes, for good or ill, we desire something so much that our minds begin to transform that which is desired until it begins to become real to us. When the desire is very strong, and there are few countering instincts or desires of sufficient strength to prevent it, sometimes the transformation completes. Sometimes that which is covetted becomes fully real in our minds. We have each of us reached that point at one time or another, with one desire or another. What was yours?
