Saturday Slant

week 30

Where was the most inopportune place you’ve fallen asleep?

Don’t have an answer? Then how about the most inopportune time you’ve fallen asleep or nodded off? What happened? What—or who—woke you up?

Plan To Reduce Spam: Tip

26 September 2003 • 19:16 PT BY Pariah Burke

Mind • Thought

I got this e-mail from Arianna at http://blog.realitycrutch.com/ about my Plan To Reduce Spam:

Hi I liked your spam plan, I’ve been doing what I can but didn’t think of keying addresses, great idea. I looked to see how you created a safe mailto, very cool! I suspected the NOSPAM in addresses wasn’t safe any more, and didn’t know how else to protect it, so I created a mailto in Flash and embedded that in my pages. Also, thanks for the meme links :)

I think embedding a mailto in a Flash image is a fantastic idea. Thanks for sharing, Arianna!

Shortcut To Change Search Bar

Recently I received the below question from a reader. I answered the reader, but I thought I would also share the answer with anyone else who might be curious.

nice site. I’ve borrowed your blogroll code — its great by the way. Do you know how to link to the sidebar from a button on the ‘links’ toolbar (or even a shortcut) so that it will open in the explorer bar?

I’ve tried adding “target=_search” to the URL in the shortcut properties. Also tried adding “” to the head section of the sidebar page. It works fine from a javascript link as in your sample.

MSDN has a complex method involving registering COM objects but hope there might be an easier way.

Star Wars Trilogy Updated for DVD

26 September 2003 • 11:33 PT BY Pariah Burke

This was sent to me, so I have no idea how accurate it is, nor the original source. I share because it sounds entirely plausible, like something George would do.

FINAL EDITION STAR WARS TRILOGY DVD CHANGES:

Episode IV: A New Hope

01. The Imperial March has been added to Darth Vader’s first appearance on Princess Leia’s ship.
02. When Obi-Wan is talking to Luke about his father Anakin’s Theme plays in the background and then it turns into the Imperial March as he talks about Vader.
03. The lightsaber effects have been redone and the frame jumps of lightsabers being turned on has been removed.
04. There’s a new scene which has been shot during the filming of Episode III in which the Emperor dissolves the Senate.
05. In the Cantina, the Duros(green aliens guys) have been replaced with Neimoidians and some aliens from the prequels have been added.

Eric Close On A Second Season

Wow! “Without A Trace” aired the series premiere tonight. This marks the first series in which Eric Close (”Once And Again,” “Dark Skies”) has played that has ever been picked up for a second season. Must have been a huge party at Close’s agent’s office.

Six Months And Counting

20 September 2003 • 11:15 PT BY Pariah Burke

Heart • Soul

This past thursday was the six month anniversary of Strawberry Blonde and my first date. After meeting through an online dating service and chatting for a couple of days via instant messenger, e-mail, and telephone, we had met in person the evening of my birthday, 18 March. We had arrived in separate cars, meeting at a casual pub and eatery. In celebration of our six months together, we recreated that night.

We went back to the same restaurant, again meeting there. As had happened half a year ago, I arrived after Strawberry Blonde. I wore the same outfit I had worn then. It was wonderful.

Strawberry Blonde and me

Strawberry Blonde and me

It’s difficult for me to express how fulfilled I am by our relationship. She is like a warm wool blanket draped about me after a lifetime of shivering in the cold. She warms me like no other has. As sappy and clichè as this sounds, she is the woman—the partner—about whom I’ve dreamt my entire life, from childhood fantasy onward. My joy and excitement over our relationship is boundless, as is my faith and elation in our future. Strawberry Blonde feels the same.

Prompted by a friend’s note yesterday that he had yet to even see Strawberry Blonde, I have included at right a photo of us together. It was taken at the Oregon State Fair, when we took the girls a few weeks ago. For all those who have expressed curiosity, this is Strawberry Blonde.

What item have you seen in someone’s house that you most wanted?

Was it something in a friend’s home or perhaps a bauble you spied during a “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous” tour of a celebrity’s home? So, tell us: What item—large or small, preferably inanimate—have you most wanted after seeing it in someone else’s home?

Saturday Slant: I’m Sick Activity

Saturday Slant

week 28

When you’re sick, what do you do—what special activity or ritual—to make yourself feel better?

Do you eat a particular comfort food? Is lounging around in your jammies your feel-better activity? Perhaps watching schlocky horror flicks makes you feel better when sick. Share your feel-better ritual with your readers.

Reality of Reality

10 September 2003 • 22:47 PT BY Pariah Burke

Mind • Thought

I’ve been watching the last few night’s Bravo’s “The Reality of Reality,” a documentary about he reality television show business. Just when I thought the genre had appalled me as much as it could, I learned what happens behind the scenes and reached new levels of disgust.

I give so-called reality television another two years before it self-destructs, most likely by virtue of going too far and turning people off.

Unfortunately I see the makeover shows (”Trading Spaces”, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” “While You Were Out,” etc.) as fizzling a short time after reality, though those will go because they oversaturate the market. Go ahead, count the makeover shows and their spinoffs. When you’re done, go check out TLC.com, Tnn.com, MTV.com, and the Oxygen Network to see just how many you missed.

Americans, we don’t know how to space out the rides on the rollercoaster. Instead, we go again and again, round and round, one trip after another, until we’re sick. Then we swear off the coaster for a few years, forcing even the really good ones, the ones that would have run for quite some time had we ridden in moderation, to close.

This is how we do everything, but my point is entertainment. We do watch—and thereby inspire the creation of—good ideas and spinoffs and knockoffs to excess, then force the death of the entire genre because excess leads to repulsion.

If we keep hopping on that coaster, tuning into the latest “While You Were Out” or “Star Search” knockoff, we’re going to get sick. When we get sick, all the good shows—the original ideas, are going to go off the air right along with, and because of, their prolific knockoffs.

Ah, phooey. I’m just wasting my time. Most of the same people who bitch about the ubiquity of reality and makeover shows today, the same people who bemoan the latest abberation like “Tempation Island”, rarely fail to tune in the show. These are the same people who honk their horns and piss and moan about traffic slowing down to look at an accident, yet, when they themselves approach the accident, creep by, craning their necks to get a good view.

Blah!

That’s it: Blah. I am ill thanks to the other day’s overnight shift from a shiny 85+ degrees to under 60 and rainy.

C’est la vie.

Saturday Slant: Forbidden Fruit

05 September 2003 • 20:36 PT BY Pariah Burke

Saturday Slant

week 27

What—or who—is your forbidden fruit?

What is it that you crave but cannot have? Is it a fiendishly deliscious but fatty food? Perhaps it’s a delictable but emotionally incompatible lover? Is your forbidden fruit a sinfully satisfying activity that aggravates a physical condition? We all have a forbidden fruit, so juicy and palatable, hanging from a taboo tree. What mouth watering something must you keep at a distance?
