What was your first kiss like?

This is a classic Saturday Slant revisited. Take a trip down memory lane to your innocence. Do you remember your first kiss? Was it electric or static, mind blowing or no big deal? What was his or her name? How did the kiss come about?

Dear Maury, My Google Page Rank Is Too High

28 May 2004 • 19:04 PT BY Pariah Burke

Mind • Thought

As in Maury Povich of the Maury Show.

In “The Cost of Page Rank“, Doug Bowman writes about the unique problem presented to blogs when Google gives too high a page rank.

Matt [Haughey] has a theory why so many people blindly believe they’ve found the right place to leave comments, or get in touch with some person or entity. And I agree with him. In fact, I’d take his theory a step further. To many people, the Google search box is synonymous with the browser’s location field. It’s the same thing to them. With the Google Toolbar installed in IE, (or because it pre-exists in other browsers) the search field is almost indistinguishable from the browser’s location field. “I type something into that field, and Google takes me where I want to go.”

Cold? Allergies? I’m Sick, But With Which One?

27 May 2004 • 23:50 PT BY Pariah Burke

Mind • Thought

I’m not a person typically allergic to things. Oregon, however, is the Land of Anti-Anti-Histemines. Stuff here makes even the hardiest of ircon-clad synuses go wonky.

So, I don’t know if I have a cold or some suddenly developed allergy. Hm. Maybe I’m allergic to my mustache. Regardless, I’m sick and blah.

I’m not the typical guy; I”m not dying of the common cold. I don’t need to be mommied (though Strawberry Blonde is so kind to me in a non-mommying way). I can still function sick (for the most part). I don’t whine.

I’m posting not to whine, but because, frankly, I’m trying to get into the habit of blogging more often. I post frequently to my professional blogs, but I want to post more regularly to my personal blog as well.

So, blah you have it.

Watching The Washingtonienne

Jessica Cutler, the Washingtonienne

The Washingtonienne

I’ve been following the Washingtonienne (aka Jessica Cutler, aka Washington Staff Ass) sex scandal saga. For the hell of it, I thought I’d give it to you just in case you…

A) Hadn’t heard about it, and;
B) Gave a damn.

For me, it was a trivial diversion from work for a few days.

So here’s the story:

The Great Pariah Copperfield

21 May 2004 • 01:03 PT BY Pariah Burke

Mind • Thought

A business associate recently told me that in my photographs (top-left) I look like a magician. It gave me a chuckle—mostly because his observation made sense. I don’t stand in front of a camera ofen, but I had never seen my photos in that particular light before.

So, presto, chango! Thank you. Good night. My seven o’clock show is even better. Adieu. >poof<

Saturday Slant: Alien Religions

Alien Religions

This week a Vatican astronomer postulated about the existance of extra-terrestrial intelligence and what such existance might mean to not only human religion but to alien religion—and cross-pollination between the two. The astrologer, Guy Consolmagno, described three scenarios: “We find an intelligent civilization and there’s no way in creation we can communicate with them because they’re so alien to us; we find the intelligent civilization. We can communicate.” And: “We find a dozen civilizations out there, and a bunch of Jehovah’s witnesses go up and convert them all.” An anonymous person on Slashdot then took Consolmagno’s comments a step further: “As agents of free-will, the aliens are self-aware of good and evil, thus convertible to some terrestrial religion. The question of whether an alien civilization might convert Earth to their religion, or become a religion unto themselves, is left unconsidered [by Consolmagno].”

I entreat you to explore what the Vatican’s astronomer did not. Extra-terrestrials and religion: what’s your Slant?

Homeless Mothers Treated Like Queens In SF

09 May 2004 • 23:40 PT BY Pariah Burke

News • Info

I wish I had found this earlier. It would have made a nice Sunday morning feel-good read this Mother’s Day. I applaud Harry Denton for this unique and generous 10 year tradition.

From a press release by Harry Denton’s Starlight Room.

San Francisco — Sunday, May 9 (Business Wire)
WHAT: 53 homeless mothers living at Hamilton Family Center will be treated to a unique day of pampering to include a private Mother’s Day Brunch complete with live entertainment and served by Harry Denton himself at his famous namesake top-floor club — Harry Denton’s Starlight Room. This is a tradition started 10 years ago by Harry Denton.

In addition, the homeless mothers will have their hair styled and make up applied in the morning before brunch (provided by Koko Represents) and ride in motorized cable cars (provided by Bauer’s Limousine) to Harry Denton’s Starlight Room.

Blogging For Dollars

Blogs are becoming commercialized. Beginning with simple Google AdSense Ads, Amazon referral links, and Cafe Press merchandising—often simply to defray the costs of site hosting—many bloggers have sought to make a little money from their blogs. Some blogs, like Daring Fireball, began with very commercial premises. Big Media is spinning up its own blogs (Slate, MSNBC). Commercial blog networks like Weblogs, Inc., Gawker Media, Corante, and AlwaysOn Network are building whole new profit models for blogs.

Somewhere between a journalist and the guy standing on the corner wearing a sandwich board, the commercialization of blogs is creating a new class of blogger: The Professional Blogger.

What’s your slant on the commercialization of blogs? Is it a good thing? Will commercialization increase public awareness of this all but hidden publishing medium? Will commercialization lead to over-saturation of the Internet? Is making money from blogging just plain wrong?

To The World: One American’s Apology

07 May 2004 • 10:25 PT BY Pariah Burke

Heart • Soul

As I sit here watching the coverage of the Senate Armed Services Committee interview of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld I feel overwhelmingly compelled to apologize to the world on behalf of my government. This feeling has been building within me for the majority of George W. Bush’s tenure as President.

I am one American apologizing for the actions of my government and my military. Though I did not vote for the current U.S. Commander In Chief or his cabinet, he works for me.

I would fire him if I could.

Blogging Is My Business. Business Is Good.

05 May 2004 • 11:53 PT BY Pariah Burke

Mind • Thought

Though I haven’t really a point or argument to make, I’m passing this along as more of an FYI.

Blogging is a new art form, and it’s a new a business form. Blogs are becoming commercial, make no mistake about that. While Big Media is trying to grok out the business model of blogs, a few savvy entrepreneurs are already out there running a model.

Choosing Between Old Friends And Stalkers

03 May 2004 • 01:57 PT BY Pariah Burke

Heart • Soul

While out running errands I ran into an old friend the other day. This old friend (we’ll call her Spitfire), has four kids of whom I’m quite fond. I’m quite fond of Spitfire and her husband as well. Spitfire and I used to live together, and, when that didn’t work out, we embarked on a pretty keen friendship. I miss that friendship. I miss the kids.

Last year, about this time, we began to fall out of touch. There were a few reasons for this. In addition to nurturing my then brand new relationship with Strawberry Blonde, I was dealing with a stalker. How does the stalker relate to Spitfire? I’ll give you the Reader’s Digest version. I’ll try not to confuse you too much.
